Which Garmin Live Scope transducer is best for you? (2026)

Which Garmin Live Scope transducer is best for you? (2026)

Garmin's LiveScope technology has completely changed the way Australians fish. Whether you're chasing barra at the river mouth, cod thick in the impoundment timber or bream on the estuaries, being able to watch fish react to your lure in real time is a genuine game changer.

With four different LiveScope transducers now available as of July 2026, choosing the right model can be daunting - as it's a big investment. Each has been designed for a different style of fishing, with varying strengths in range, image clarity and target application.

LiveScope Plus (LVS34) – The Proven All-Rounder

The LVS34 has been the benchmark live sonar for several years and remains an outstanding option for the vast majority of anglers. It offers excellent image quality, impressive target separation and works exceptionally well in freshwater and inshore saltwater environments. Many anglers have caught the fish of their dreams with the help of an LVS34 and just because new models have been released, it doesn't mean the LVS34 is old technology and out-dated.

Best suited to:

  • General all round lure fishing at standard casting range

  • Can pick up fish at 30-40m but best detail is closer to boat

  • Murray cod, barramundi, bream, bass, golden perch - do it all

If you regularly fish within 30-40 metres of the boat, the LVS34 continues to deliver outstanding performance at an attractive price point. It still represents one of the best value live sonar systems available. And that's the key here - value. With a cheaper RRP price than the new models, and plenty on the used market, these will continue to be a great buy for many anglers.

LiveScope XR (LVS62) – Built for Coastal & Saltwater

When Garmin developed the XR, the focus wasn't maximum detail, it was maximum range.

Designed specifically for offshore and deep-water anglers, the XR allows you to scan significantly further ahead of the boat than the standard LiveScope systems. This makes it ideal for locating fish schools before driving over them.

The range in saltwater is good to 100m, and further in freshwater.

Best suited to:

  • Southern bluefin tuna

  • Kingfish

  • Northern pelagics ie trevally, mackerel, wahoo

  • Deep reef fishing

  • Offshore bait schools

For Australian offshore anglers targeting tuna or searching vast areas of open water, the XR remains the specialist choice thanks to its exceptional long-range performance.

LiveScope 2 HD (LVS42HD) – Maximum Detail at Casting Distance

The new LVS42HD is Garmin's highest-definition LiveScope transducer to date. Rather than increasing range, Garmin has focused on producing the clearest, most detailed images possible within normal casting distances.

LVS42HD is perfect for yellow belly/bream/bass style fishing. Close range unbeatable clarity however is a shorter range transducer, good to around 18-20m.

Operating on a higher frequency, it delivers exceptional target separation, making individual fish, lures and structure easier to distinguish.

The LiveScope 2 transducers connect directly to your compatible chartplotter and power source making installation easy because there’s no black box.

Best suited to:

  • Tournament bream anglers - on boat hulls, racks, timber, pontoons etc

  • Murray cod & barra - close range - eg smaller rivers and in timber

  • Golden perch - jigging timber

  • Bass

  • Precision structure fishing

If your fishing revolves around casting accurately to fish and structure within around 35-40 metres, the LVS42HD offers the highest image quality Garmin has ever produced.

LiveScope 2 (LVS44) – The New All-Round Flagship

The LVS44 effectively replaces the LVS34 as Garmin's premium all-purpose LiveScope transducer.

It combines approximately 20% higher resolution with around 25% more usable range, while also offering wider sonar coverage and simplified installation by connecting directly to compatible Garmin displays without requiring a separate black box. For anglers wanting one system capable of everything from estuaries through to offshore fishing, this is now Garmin's flagship option.

It offers longer range than the LVS42HD. LVS44 perfect for impoundment Murray Cod. You can now spot cod out to 35-40m no worries at all with great clarity. Closer range is still an improvement on the 34 but not as much as the 42HD. Out past 25-40m has similar clarity to the 34 at 20-30m. This is perfect for cod in many dams where they have become quite wary of noisy boats and will spook at closer range.

Best suited to:

  • Impoundment Murray Cod and barramundi fishing

  • Good all-rounder for those who fish open water and longer distances

Which One Should You Choose?

For most Australian anglers, the choice is surprisingly straightforward:

  • LVS34 – Outstanding value and still an excellent performer for almost every style of fishing.

  • XR – The clear choice for serious offshore anglers chasing tuna and pelagic species over long distances.

  • LVS42HD – Perfect for anglers who prioritise the sharpest possible image and fish mostly within closer casting range.

  • LVS44 – The new premium all-rounder, combining increased range with improved image quality for anglers wanting the best of both worlds.

No matter which LiveScope system you choose, real-time sonar has fundamentally changed modern fishing. Watching fish react to your lure, understanding their behaviour and making immediate adjustments simply catches more fish and that's why LiveScope has become one of the most influential fishing technologies ever developed.
